Hi, my name is Victor Mesquita, VM PERSONAL Founder, and I’m an open book…
I’m going to do something different now – I’m going to talk all about me. So bare with me, because if all goes well, it will be an interesting ride for the both of us.
It’s been said that I’m “functional trainer freak” who is always questioning the functionality of any exercise in relation to its objective. Well, in saying that I can also tell that “functional” has a very broad meaning, so I can just say that what I always try to do is to find the most suitable exercise for a specific goal. If there is no relation between exercise x goal, you will probably hear me saying “don’t bother doing that!”.
I graduated from University (Bachelor of Health and Physical Education) back in Brazil in 2012 but I have started my fitness career in Australia in 2009.
Now you may be questioning yourself how and why I graduated after starting the career? Well, my journey actually began in 2006 when I first left Brazil (I was 21) and went to New Zealand to learn English (pardon my English mistakes…). Now, putting the pieces together: from New Zealand, after working as a housekeeper and car detailer, amongst other few different jobs, I moved to Melbourne in 2009. I was looking for better opportunities (well, looking at getting into the fitness industry, really!).
So I completed my Cert IV in Fitness in Australia and started working in the local gym where I was a member… Man, the first shift in the Gym it looked like I was in a dream… Felt like home! From there I found a Job in a Leisure Centre in the City of Melbourne, and that’s when things started to get serious… PT clients, group classes, learning and learning. There was where I found my first mentor, Jeff. He was on his 50’s and he did not even look very fit, but he was! And so knowledgeable! One of the best trainers I have ever met, and I can tell you that I have met a few good ones.
From Melbourne I went back to Brazil, in 2011. The funny thing is that I needed a degree to be a PT back home (that’s why I graduated after starting my career, as in Australia a Cert IV was enough!). No worries, I joined the University 2 years before moving to New Zealand, so I ended up going back and having to study for another 4 semesters till I graduate. I can confidently say that having the academic knowledge does make a difference in terms of knowledge, skills and experience. I was a much better professional with a Bachelor Degree.
I also had the opportunity to travel and meet my technique mentor JC Santana in Boca Raton, USA, where I spent a whole weekend upgrading my skills. That experience took my PT knowledge to a whole new level.
My style of training was funny for most of the old school professionals in Brazil. In my city (Porto Alegre, in South of Brazil, with nearly 2 million people) I was probably the only one who started my career overseas, and functional training was not developed at all… So everyone looked at me and asked “what is this exercise for?”, and honestly, self-confidence was never an issue for me, so the more they asked, the more different stuff I did.
Long story short, as soon as I graduated in Brazil I had over 35 PT clients and also an outdoor boot camp location. It might be something relatively normal for a PT, but in Brazil no one ever thought about doing outdoor boot camps or anything too different (at least in my home city).
I always wanted to differentiate my job from other Personal Trainers. They actually never worried about professionalizing their careers, and they never did anything further than put their names on a fancy Nike shirt with the tag “Personal Trainer” (something like “John Citizen Personal Trainer”) on it. Well, I did not want my name in my own uniform, but in the same time, I wanted a personalised apparel. I also wanted every client of mine using my T’shirts, so there we go: VM PERSONAL was born!
Time goes and Brazil was great! I had a lot of experience working with professional football athletes, top models, Brazilian girls looking for a perfect butt (you can probably imagine that!), but the best clients I had were always the regular clients looking for health and wellbeing. Actually, I can easily say that I only had amazing people as clients in my career, and I highly believe that is because when you want to impact positively in people’s lives, the law of reciprocity kicks in and I end up receiving the same energy from people around me…
Came the time that I was looking at expanding my business and take it to the next level, but when someone tried to break into my car and still the $5000 worth of equipment I had inside it, I realised that Brazil was not the place I wanted to live in.
Lucky enough I already knew how things worked in Australia, and despite all the paperwork, visas, and the hassle of changing country for the fourth time in 8 years, I had made a decision of moving back to Australia again.
What a decision! I never look back and I do love Australia so much!
I knew Australia was the perfect place to develop my potential and most importantly help as many people as I could. My wife (who I met in Brazil in 2011 and she always supports me in every decision) and I decided to come and restart our lives. Hard for both of us, she is a well-known Cardiologist in Brazil and I already had my own business and client base, but challenges were never an issue for us. So there we came across the globe in 2014, starting from nil.
Nowadays I have got my client base back, a Fitness Centre management experience, a happy life and willing to take things to another level.
As a personal Trainer with over 8 years experience, I founded VM PERSONAL with the aim of always try to add value to people’s life. As a PT I can only help a certain number of clients, and my willingness to reach out more people has been the topic of many conversat
ions at home. In addition, my wife is so much into fitness as I am, which is great! Can you imagine how a University Qualified PT and a Cardiologist can have extremely deep scientific based discussions about exercise, nutrition, physiology and the human body that it would be worth writing a book from the conclusions we develop. Therefore, we decided that we are going to share with the world what we know in the form of Exercise Programs and Informative Videos. And now you understand why you end up on this website, reading this little article.
For me, life is about living your passion and find your purpose. There’s absolutely no other industry that I’d rather serve than the Fitness Industry. So whether you’re looking to have good information, be fitter, eat healthier, exercise better, or live a better life, VM PERSONAL is the place where you’ll find the blueprint to help you get there.
Committed to your fitness,
